Bats are nocturnal animals. They seem harmless but they are a nuisance and dangerous. They are carriers and can transfer many diseases to humans. Bats live in colonies and if allowed to settle roost in large numbers. Bat droppings (guano) are smelly and can corrode and damage building structures. They also are an excellent breeding ground for fungal disease which can be transferred to humans. It is therefore essential that steps are taken to remove bats immediately after sighting.
Bats are a protected species and killing of Huntsville bats is illegal. Control and removal of bats is done by trained professionals who charge a fee. For people who cannot afford bat removal free bat removal is possible by doing it themselves.
There are many varieties of bats and it is important to know the kind of bat occupying your home. This is necessary because bat removal must not be done during the maternity season. There is a great possibility of the presence of baby bats. Removal of the mother bat can cause the babies to die. Baby bats cannot survive without their mothers care. This is both illegal and inhumane.
Removal of bats is also a time consuming process. It involves patient observing and waiting. Bats love high places and bat removal involves climbing on ladders. People afraid of height must never attempt bat removal.
Observation
The points of entry and exit used by bats must be observed. This is best done by observing your home at dusk when bats fly out in search of food. All points must be noted and marked. The commonly used points are vent, ridge caps, and damaged areas of the house, broken window panes, small gaps and openings.
Sealing
Once the entry points are marked they must be sealed leaving one main entry/exit open. Sealing is done with caulk, foam, steel, netting etc. Observe again at dusk to ensure that there are no gaps left unsealed (expect the main entry).
Setting up exclusion
Exclusion netting screens are fitted in the main entry point so that Alabama bats can fly out but not fly back inside. The exclusion devise has to be properly installed. Huntsville bats using it to fly out must be able to do so naturally. Repeated observation is needed to ensure that all bats have flown out. This has to be done before the exclusion barrier is removed and sealed. Any bat if left behind will not be able to fly out once the final exit is sealed. The exclusion barrier is now permanently sealed.
Cleaning and decontamination
After all the Alabama bats have been removed the area must be cleaned and decontaminated. Bat guano must be completely removed. The place must be deodorized to remove all smell.
Even after all the bats have been removed regular inspection must be carried out to avoid reentry of bats. Bats have a good memory and a long life. They will attempt to visit old haunts again. Gaps and holes must be closed if found.
